There is no national sticker for Italy. A ZTL is a permission zone, not an emissions zone: there is no vignette you can buy that admits you anywhere, the way Crit'Air or the Umweltplakette does. Access is granted zone by zone by the comune — to residents, permit holders and (usually) guests of hotels inside the zone. Permission is usually granted rather than sold, but some comuni are starting to sell annual ZTL permits outright — so check with the comune rather than assuming there is nothing to pay. If you have booked a hotel in the centre, ask them to register your plate before you arrive.

Which part of the centre, and when

Firenze's ZTL is divided into lettered sectors. Each is enforced by its own cameras, so this is the table that decides whether one wrong turn costs you one fine or several.

Firenze's zone is split into 5 sectors (A, B, F, G, O). Sectors are the reason a single wrong turn can cost more than one fine: crossing from one sector into another passes another camera, and each crossing is charged separately. Driving across the centre can therefore produce several fines from one journey, not one.

How to get permission

There is no national portal and nothing to order in advance. Permits are issued by Comune di Firenze, usually to residents and businesses inside the zone. Visitors normally get access one of two ways: a hotel inside the zone registering your plate for the nights you stay, or a temporary permit applied for directly with the comune. If nobody has registered your plate, assume you may not enter.

The fine is triggered the moment you cross a gate — not by being inside the area, and not by parking. That distinction is expensive: where a city is split into several sectors, each sector can issue its own separate fine on a single trip. Florence is the best-known case, and it is why gates are stored as their own data here rather than treated as decoration.
